Data assimilation of multilayer snowpack on Argentière glacier, using X-band SAR data, DMRT and a detailed snowpack model

چکیده
This study discuss the potential of using remote sensing data from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), couple with Dense Media Radiative Transfer (DMRT) model, to constrain the snowpack's optical grain size and density calculated by the detailed snowpack model Crocus. A snowpack Electromagnetic Backscattering Model (EBM) based on DMRT compatible with X-band and Ku-band frequencies is developed from the previous one by Longépé et al., 2009. From measured or simulated snowpack stratigraphic profiles consisting of snow optical grain size, density, the model calculates the backscattering coefficient σ 0 for co-polarized channels (HH and VV). Next, from the EBM, the adjoint operator is developed and used in a variational assimilation scheme in order to minimize the discrepancies between simulations and SAR image data observations. A time series of TerraSAR-X acquisitions on Argentière glacier (Chamonix Mont Blanc, France) is used to test the proposed scheme.

1D-Var multilayer assimilation of X-band SAR data into a detailed snowpack model
The structure and physical properties of a snowpack and their temporal evolution may be simulated using meteorological data and a snow metamorphism model. Such an approach may meet limitations related to potential divergences and accumulated errors, to a limited spatial resolution, to wind or topography-induced local modulations of the physical properties of a snow cover, etc. Exogenous data ar...
متن کاملMonitoring Alpine glacier activity by a combined use of TerraSAR-X images and continuous GPS measurements – the Argentière glacier experiment
The monitoring of Alpine glacier activity is one of the applications which require the combined use of ground measurements and SAR data. It should become feasible thanks to the new generation SAR satellites (ALOS, TerraSAR-X, Cosmo-SkyMed and RadarSAT-2) and the high precision GPS measurements. This paper presents the early results of an experiment which started in 2007 on Argentière glacier (M...

متن کاملSimulation of the microwave emission of multi-layered snowpacks using the Dense Media Radiative transfer theory: the DMRT-ML model
DMRT-ML is a physically based numerical model designed to compute the thermal microwave emission of a given snowpack. Its main application is the simulation of brightness temperatures at frequencies in the range 1–200 GHz similar to those acquired routinely by spacebased microwave radiometers. The model is based on the Dense Media Radiative Transfer (DMRT) theory for the computation of the snow...
متن کاملMonitoring of Wet Snow and Accumulations at High Alpine Glaciers Using Radar Technologies
Conventional studies to assess the annual mass balance for glaciers rely on single point observations in combination with model and interpolation approaches. Just recently, airborne and spaceborne data is used to support such mass balance determinations. Here, we present an approach to map temporal changes of the snow cover in glaciated regions of Tyrol, Austria, using SAR-based satellite data....
